Don't be fooled by their size. A single house mouse can squeeze through a gap no wider than a pencil, contaminate your kitchen with up to 80 droppings per day, and establish a breeding colony inside your walls within weeks. Jim's licensed technicians locate nesting sites, eliminate the infestation completely and seal entry points to prevent mice from returning — all backed by APVMA-compliant treatments and a documented service certificate.

The house mouse (Mus musculus) is Australia's most widespread and persistent domestic rodent pest. Found in every state and territory, it thrives in both urban and rural environments, adapting rapidly to changes in its surroundings. Unlike rats, mice are naturally curious rather than neophobic — they will readily investigate new objects, food sources and bait stations, which sounds like an advantage but also means they can quickly learn to avoid traps that have been poorly placed or handled.
Physical characteristics:
Nesting behaviour:
Mice nest close to their food source — rarely travelling more than 3–5 metres from their nest. This makes kitchens, pantries, wall cavities behind appliances and insulation inside walls their preferred locations. Nests are constructed from shredded paper, insulation, fabric and any soft material available. A mouse nest found in a kitchen wall cavity is almost always accompanied by a food source within arm's reach.
Breeding rate:
A female mouse reaches sexual maturity at just six weeks and can produce up to ten litters per year, with five to eight pups per litter. A small, undetected mouse problem can become a serious infestation remarkably quickly — particularly over the cooler months when mice seek warmth and shelter inside buildings.

MICE PEST CONTROL

At Jim’s Termite & Pest Control, we specialise in delivering customised mice control solutions that address the unique needs of your home or business. Every service starts with a detailed inspection to determine the extent of the infestation and locate entry points, nesting areas, and attractants.
Based on our assessment, we develop a comprehensive rodent treatment plan designed to eliminate mice quickly and prevent them from returning.

Food contamination
A mouse produces up to 80 droppings per day and urinates constantly as it moves — leaving invisible trails across kitchen benches, inside drawers, over utensils and through food storage areas. Salmonellosis and Listeria are both transmissible through surfaces and food contaminated by mouse droppings and urine, with no visible sign of contamination to the naked eye.
Structural damage
Like all rodents, mice gnaw continuously. Electrical wiring, plumbing, insulation, cabinetry and structural timbers are all targets. In a kitchen or laundry environment, a mouse chewing through a water supply line or electrical cable behind a wall can cause significant damage before it's ever detected.
Disease transmission
Beyond food contamination, mice are known carriers of Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis and Hantavirus — the latter transmissible through inhalation of dust contaminated with mouse droppings during cleaning. Mice also carry fleas, mites and ticks, which can independently infest your home and affect both pets and family members.
Australia's mouse plague risk
Australia is uniquely vulnerable to mouse population explosions following good seasons in agricultural areas. Urban properties on the fringe of affected regions — or those with poor entry point sealing — can experience sudden, severe infestations with very little warning. Professional proofing before plague season is significantly more cost-effective than reactive treatment during one.
Hardware store snap traps and supermarket bait blocks are a common first response to a mouse problem. For a genuinely isolated single mouse they may suffice. For any established infestation, DIY approaches consistently fail for three reasons:
They address individuals, not the colony — removing one or two mice while the nest remains active and breeding simply slows the visible signs temporarily. The population replenishes within days.
Poor placement — mice travel defined runways close to walls and behind appliances. Traps placed in open floor space are largely ignored. Effective placement requires knowledge of mouse behaviour and runway identification during a proper inspection.
2026 APVMA regulatory changes — the most effective rodenticide formulations are now increasingly restricted to licensed pest management professionals following the March 2026 interim restrictions on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides. Products remaining on open sale at supermarkets and hardware stores are less potent and require more time and repeat applications to achieve results. Read more about the 2026 APVMA changes →

We understand the distress and discomfort pests can bring into your home, disrupting your peace and potentially causing health issues. Our highly trained technicians are skilled at detecting even the subtlest signs of pest presence, ensuring no area goes unchecked.

Your Jim's technician conducts a thorough inspection of the property to identify active runways, locate nesting sites, assess the extent of the infestation and identify all entry points. Kitchen cabinetry, wall cavities, roof voids, subfloor spaces and the building perimeter are all assessed. Finding the nest — not just the signs of mouse activity — is the critical first step.
All bait stations are Jim's branded, tamper-resistant and locked. Stations are positioned along confirmed active runways — close to walls, behind appliances and near confirmed nest locations — not placed randomly. Commercial-grade rodenticide formulations compliant with current APVMA regulations are used, providing more effective results than products available to the general public.
Entry Point Identification & Sealing Recommendations
A 6mm gap is all a mouse needs to enter your property. Your technician identifies all confirmed and potential entry points — gaps around pipes, cables and conduits, weep holes, damaged door seals, gaps in cabinetry and any structural openings — and provides specific recommendations for permanent sealing.
Follow-Up, Station Removal & Documentation
The follow-up visit is included in your original service fee. Your technician assesses bait uptake, removes any deceased mice and removes all bait stations from the property once the infestation is confirmed as resolved — in line with APVMA requirements. You receive a formal certificate of treatment documenting all services performed, products used, bait station locations and your confirmed follow-up visit date.
Professional treatment resolves an active infestation. These measures protect your property long-term:
Seal every gap larger than 6mm — inspect around all pipe penetrations, conduits, weep holes, door seals and subfloor vents. Use stainless steel mesh, metal kick plates or rodent-proof sealant rather than expanding foam alone, which mice can chew through.
Eliminate food access — store all food including pet food in sealed hard containers. Clean up crumbs, grease and food residue from benches, behind appliances and inside cabinetry regularly.
Manage clutter and storage — mice nest in undisturbed clutter. Cardboard boxes, stored clothing and infrequently accessed storage areas are prime nesting locations. Use sealed plastic storage containers instead.
Garden and perimeter management — keep vegetation, woodpiles and garden debris away from the building perimeter. Compost bins should be sealed and positioned away from the house.
Regular professional inspections — particularly before winter, when mice actively seek warmth and shelter inside buildings. Early detection before an infestation establishes is always cheaper and less disruptive than treatment after the fact.
